Yoga

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥ १.२ ॥

तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपेऽवस्थानम् ॥ १.३ ॥

Patanjali Yoga Sutra talks about the goal of yoga and how to achieve it. When the mind calms down, the real Self is revealed. So really we need to stop doing stuff and transition to just being.

स्थिरसुखम् आसनम् ॥ २.४६॥

Yoga asana is a balance between steadiness and ease. Whatever postures we do, we should be able to hold for hours or days with out any discomfort. Really the goal of asana is to be able to sit for meditation.

Surya Namaskaram - the sequence of 12 postures in sun salutation is all we need to practice daily to maintain health. Try 101 (or 12) rounds of surya Namaskaram for a healthy workout!

Stretch/Strengthen body

Yoga asanas can stretch and strengthen  the entire body - the muscles, bones, facia and the internal organs. We can use the weight of our own body to strengthen all the muscles and bones. Yoga postures not only stretch the body, they increase flexibility and mobility. Did you know that rather than power yoga, there is more benefit in doing the asanas slowly and mindfully. That way we can avoid injuries. Yoga can compliment all other sports we are already doing.

स तु दीर्घकालनैरन्तर्यसत्कारासेवितो दृढभूमिः ॥ १.१४॥

Steady uninterrupted practice with faith.

While there are large number of videos online, the best way to learn yoga is in person from a teacher who takes the time to help you adjust and align your body correctly. Be kind and be gentle to yourself.
